“We guarantee 100,000 hours.”
Almost every LED manufacturer says something similar.
Then six or seven years later, the screen looks dimmer, some areas don’t match anymore, and the customer starts asking a different question:
“If it was rated for 100,000 hours, why does it look like this?”
We’ve been manufacturing LED displays since 2008, and this is one of those questions where the number on the datasheet doesn’t tell the whole story.
The honest answer is that a good LED display can last for many years. But how long it remains bright, uniform and reliable depends heavily on how it is designed, installed and operated.
The 100,000-hour figure you often see is usually related to L70.
L70 describes the expected point at which an LED’s light output has declined to around 70% of its initial level under the specified test conditions.
It does not mean the screen suddenly stops working after 100,000 hours.
It also doesn’t mean every component in the display will last 100,000 hours.
That’s an important distinction.
An LED wall is a system. It includes LED packages, driver ICs, PCBs, power supplies, receiving cards, connectors, cooling components and other parts. The LEDs may still be working while a power supply or receiving card needs replacement.
And real installations aren’t laboratories.
A screen in an air-conditioned conference room is living a very different life from a digital billboard sitting in direct sunlight every day.
There isn’t one number that applies to every LED display, but these are reasonable planning ranges for commercial applications:

*Actual service life depends on brightness, operating hours, temperature, installation environment, component quality and maintenance.
A 24/7 control room runs about 8,760 hours per year.
So even if you simply divide 100,000 by 8,760, you get roughly 11.4 years.
But that’s not a promise that the screen will look exactly the same for 11.4 years.
That’s where the real-world factors come in.
This is one of the big ones.
LEDs can be driven harder to produce more brightness, but running components continuously at higher current also increases thermal stress and accelerates degradation.
That’s why maximum brightness isn’t automatically a sign of a better product.
A well-designed display should have enough brightness for the application without unnecessarily over-driving the LEDs.
Heat is one of the biggest enemies of electronics.
Poor ventilation, high ambient temperatures, blocked airflow and inadequate thermal design can all shorten component life.
Outdoor displays have an especially difficult job because they can be exposed to direct sunlight and high ambient temperatures for hours every day.
For example, Canbest’s APRO Series uses an aluminum structure and thermal-management design for high-brightness outdoor applications, while the APRO-S Series is designed for environments ranging from -40°C to +70°C.
The point isn’t simply to make the cabinet “weatherproof.”
It also needs to manage the heat generated during operation.
Dust, humidity, salt air, UV exposure and temperature changes all affect a display differently.
A screen near the coast has different corrosion risks from one installed in a dry indoor lobby.
A billboard in Arizona has a very different thermal load from one installed indoors.
And an IP rating only tells you about the protection provided by the enclosure under defined conditions. It doesn’t mean the electronics are immune to every environmental problem.
For demanding outdoor applications, products such as Canbest’s APRO-H Series and APro-ULT COB Series are designed around specific environmental requirements rather than simply adding a high IP rating to a standard indoor cabinet.
We’ve seen customers run an indoor display much brighter than the room actually requires.
It doesn’t make the image better.
It just increases power consumption and thermal load.
If the display is installed in a conference room, there’s no reason to operate it at outdoor billboard brightness.
Using an appropriate brightness level, and automatic brightness control where appropriate, can make a meaningful difference over years of operation.
A screen can have excellent LED components and still suffer from poor power conditions.
Voltage fluctuations, surges and low-quality power supplies can create problems long before the LEDs reach their rated L70 point.
For outdoor installations, surge protection and proper grounding should be part of the system design, not something added after the first failure.
This one is easy to overlook.
Dust builds up.
Fans get dirty.
Connections loosen.
Modules age at slightly different rates.
Color and brightness uniformity can gradually change.
Regular inspection and calibration won’t make an old screen new again, but it can keep the display looking consistent for considerably longer.
For larger commercial installations, maintenance should be treated as part of the original project plan.

Does COB actually last longer?
Not necessarily in terms of the LED’s L70 rating.
The bigger difference is how the LED surface handles the environment.
SMD uses individually packaged LEDs mounted on the PCB. It’s mature, widely used and relatively straightforward to repair depending on the design.
COB mounts the LED chips directly to the PCB and encapsulates them.
That creates a more protected front surface and can improve resistance to physical contact, dust and moisture.
For example, Canbest’s DM COB Series uses COB technology and is designed for applications including control rooms, broadcast studios, corporate boardrooms and other environments where durability and continuous operation matter.
So we wouldn’t say:
“COB has a 30% longer lifespan than SMD.”
That’s too simplistic.
We’d say:
The LED rating may be similar, but COB can be the better choice when the installation environment puts more physical or environmental stress on the display.
That’s a much more useful way to look at it.
And there’s a trade-off: COB usually costs more, and repairs are generally handled at module level rather than replacing an individual packaged LED.
A display’s lifespan doesn’t start when it is installed.
It starts at the factory.
Our production process includes aging and testing designed to identify early component or module problems before products are shipped.
For long-term projects, we also recommend keeping appropriate spare modules and critical components available. A five-year-old display shouldn’t become impossible to repair simply because one module is no longer available.

That matters because the real cost of an LED display isn’t just the purchase price.
Downtime costs money too.
For a digital billboard, a failed section can mean lost advertising revenue.
For a control room, it can affect operations.
For a rental company, a damaged panel can mean losing an entire event.
Reliability has a value that doesn’t always appear in the initial quotation.
We wouldn’t replace a screen simply because it has reached a certain number of years.
Look at its condition.
A replacement starts making sense when:
This last point is surprisingly common.
Many indoor LED walls are retired not because they stopped working, but because the customer wants a finer pitch or a newer display technology.
A P2.5 wall that still works perfectly may simply be replaced by a P1.5 wall because the viewing distance and content requirements have changed.
If you want a simple answer:
A well-designed indoor LED display can reasonably serve for 6–10 years. Outdoor displays often have a shorter practical life because of heat, UV and weather exposure. Rental displays can also have a shorter cycle because transportation and handling add another type of wear.
But don’t choose an LED display based only on a “100,000-hour” label.
Ask about:
LED components + thermal design + brightness management + power system + environmental protection + maintenance + spare parts.
Those things tell you much more about how the screen will perform after five years.
And that’s really what matters.
A good LED display shouldn’t just look impressive on the day you install it. It should still be a good display years later.
